Experience and Training

Head instructor and school owner Dallas Johnson has over 15 years of martial arts experience. Beginning with Kempo at 14, Dallas began competing in Kickboxing and Shito-Ryu Karate over the next 3 years. At 18 Dallas began training in Wing Chun Kung Fu and enjoyed it’s “no nonsense” approach to combat, which would lay the foundation of his own “no nonsense approach” to training.

Continuing his boxing training, he began a full-time pursuit of Hapkido in 1999. Under the tutelage of Grandmaster Song, Han Jae, a direct student of the arts founder Ji, Han Jae, Dallas acquired his black belt in 3 years.

Using his remaining spare time, Dallas also started training in Jujutsu under Sensei Dan W. Rheaume 3 days/week, which he continues to this day. (www.bujinkanbc.ca)

From Student to Teacher...

Dallas has been teaching classes since 2001 and seminars since 2004, sharing his passion and enthusiasm for the arts with others and inspiring new students. Opting to stress the similarities between the arts rather than their differences, he teaches his students the subtleties and differences of training indoors and fighting outdoors. His curriculum is based on realism, true intent, and has special training on adrenaline and aggression issues. Given the nature of these techniques, it is vital we develop the character along with skills and techniques.

Any techniques in the hands of an unethical or immoral person can be harmful. This being said, Danjun Self-Defense School chooses their students with discretion and therefore, screens students before and during training to insure they possess good intent or are in the process of developing it. We pride ourselves in producing highly trained black belts of sound character that represent themselves and the arts with high standards.

Eventually the skills you acquire are no longer skills. In time they become an involuntary method of movement. Many say ‘It takes years to master’. Although there is some truth to this, the length of time it takes should always be up to you. Some students prefer to continue training in traditional atmospheres with traditional teachers. Others prefer to remain competing in sport arts with sport minded teachers.

“In the end a person’s perspective and commitment are what makes the difference — not just in Martial Arts, but in everyday life.”

In Person

With his fun loving, outgoing, high energy personality Dallas Johnson creates a training environment that is filled with a humorous, low stress atmosphere, yet peppered with some good, old fashioned hard work.

Studies show that a relaxed but disciplined atmosphere provides a better learning environment and actually improves ones ability to learn and retain information.

Like Grand Master Song, Instructor Dallas Johnson firmly believes in the philosophy

Laughter is the Key
to Success!
